THE EFFECTS OF FOOTING It is useful to compare the physical characteristics of different surfaces in relation to their effect on the horse's stride. Hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt, hard soil) have a high impact resistance and a high shear resistance. Consequently, the limbs are subjected to considerable concussion, and the toe is unable to penetrate the surface, which produces high loads in the navicular region in the terminal stance phase. Sand has a somewhat lower impact resistance than hard soil, combined with a low shear resistance which allows the toe to penetrate deeply. However, deep sand tends to give way resulting in a loss of traction. Since horses must use a greater muscular effort to overcome the tendency of the sand to give way, the working heart rate will be up to 50% higher on deep sand. This is why sand is so tiring for the horse to work on. |

| Amendments, such as textiles and fibers, are added to sand to improve the properties as a riding surface. GGT-Footing, a shredded textile, stabilizes the sand particles - this mimics the effect of the rooting system of turf, which has a stabilizing effect on the surrounding soil particles. Our products give more resilience, reduce the amount of packing and help to hold moisture in the surface, which leads to reduced dust. | |

| June 30th, 2010 Hey, guys!! I wanted to give you an update on the footing in my arena!!! This past weekend I hosted a dressage clinic with JJ Tate. Everyone was interested in the footing. We had a huge storm on Saturday evening. The arena had water on one end. By morning, I went down and gave it a drag and rode on it at 7:30. It was perfect!!! Then last night we REALLY had a huge storm....rain blowing sideways (I forgot to check the rain gauge). Again standing water on one end. I rode in it and it was perfect! I skipped the end with the standing water and that is not a footing issue.....But....I love it!!!! It feels wonderful! Thanks! Toi |

Type of Sand
The best sand to use is silica sand. Silica sand is very hard and will not degrade easily. Check with your quarry to see what is available to you. It is your responsibility to ensure that your sand has the correct sizes of particles. Results will vary with the quality and size of your sand, and the type of base that your arena has. Particle Size You will want the particles be fine to very fine - ranging between an (ASTM) #60 sieve (.250 mm) and an #200 sieve (.075 mm). Ask your gravel pit or quarry to give you a sieve analysis, which should always be available for the types of sands they sell. This will help you to determine the specific particle size of each type of sand. Particle Shape The third part of this equation is the shape of the sand particle which works best if it is a sub-angular shape. However, because silica sands are formed from erosion, most silica sand will be a round to sub-angular sand particle. It is ok to use a very fine round particle but you may want to have a small amount of sub-angular particles added to the sand to help with stability. The sand should also be well graded: meaning that all the sand particles should not be the same size. Most gravel pits will mix different sands for you so that you can get a variety of grades, shapes, and sizes. You will need at least five different sieve sizes ranging from #60 to a #200 Sieve. Mixing GGT with Sand Good Performance Add GGT to new or existing sand that meets specifications without a professionally installed base. Best Performance Add GGT to a professionally installed base that includes a base mat system such as Hoof Grid. New or existing sand that meets specifications. Installation Ask the gravel pit if they can blend the GGT and sand together for you and have it delivered pre-mixed. If this is not an option, you can learn how to mix the GGT easily on your own by watching our short video (located here at the top of the page.) You are liable for installing your sand and product.
